– UPDATE 2017 –
Hello dear reader, I know that this blog post sometimes get linked in discussions about MTG cards and some of the problematic art that may appear in the game. Sometimes, linked also in discussions about Wizards way of handling and answering to the community. In the past years I’ve always found it fun to see my written text used in this discussion, until I actually took the time to read it again.
Now I mostly feel silly, ashamed and also very surprised about the person I was only a few years back. Much has happened since then of course, when it comes to discussing issues and problematic trends in game design.
And I just want you to know that my opinion on these topics have changed drastically, not becuase I’m a great defender of justice, not because I got brainwashed, but because I’ve taken the time to learn, listen and realize that me and my opinions are not set in stone, rather they are set in a formable clay. And I will happily reform that clay and add to it by learning and creating a greater understanding of the world around me.
Now, I will not remove or change the original text, it stands as a reminder to myself that I in fact changed alot the last few years, and I’m very proud of that evolution.
To end with a quick thought, Wizard clearly did the right thing to apoligize for the art itself and to not use it in future printings of the card. If a big part of their community feels affected and troubled by the card art, it’s a problem. MTG is a game that in itself should welcome all players and groups, and this kind of card just did not fit into that. It created a situation online and at events that became very non-welcoming to the games non-male demographic. I will leave it that for now, and clarify in the comments if you have any questions.
We can all learn. We can all change.
I just did not imagine that I would do so without actually realizing that I did.
I’m sitting here with a feeling of: what just happened? I’ve been following discussions on Twitter that has been going on for the last few hours. The discussions concern a new card from Avacyn Restored; Triumph of Ferocity.
Can you guess why this card has been wildly discussed? I think you can, but it may not be as clear as you think. As it seems, it’s about 50/50 in what people see in this picture. I for one actually liked this artwork, it shows the struggle between Garruk and Liliana, he’s about to smack her down and she is just about to throw a spell in his face. I bet many of you see that as well, but some of you will see something completely different. Something that I understand can be disturbing; and that is that the whole scene taking place symbolizes rape.
Taking a step back, yes it’s a struggle between a man and woman. Had this been two men fighting, I doubt we would be having this discussion right now. Maybe we would have, but I doubt it. I respect the fact that some people see this in the artwork, and I understand where it comes from. But I almost feel as if this issue or idea has been taken a bit… far.
Why do you see “rape” when you look at this image?
Is it because we see a female in a weaker position towards a male? Is it because of the position of the bodies, and again the fact that the male character has a more aggressive/overhead stance over her? That’s what I’m guessing and yes I see that too, but where is the part that says rape? Why is he forced to be judged as someone that is about to rape a woman?
Turn the two roles around, let’s imagine Liliana (the woman) pushing Garruk down towards a rock. Now he is the spell caster, what would you think of the art? Just a quick thought would be: “Sweet! She is kicking ass!” instead of right now; “Why is he forcing her down like that?!”
It annoys me greatly that a struggle between a male character and a female character where the man is winning apparently is not accepted as artwork.
But, I understand, once again, where you’re coming from with these thoughts. I respect that fact, but I also hope that you can respect that I disagree. Artworks in a game will “always” at one time or another, create these emotions. And that is what this card was created for, emotion of what is taking place. I think that this one card may have captured it better than any card in Avacyn Restored. Not only do we realize it, a lot of you feel it so strongly that you turn it into a problem.
I’ll gladly get some comments on this, cause I’m writing straight out of my head. I probably didn’t follow up on all my thoughts or explained them well enough. If so, comment, discuss and I will be back with a follow up.
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
Hello my Nurglings!
Let me tell you a tale, of a certain player nicknamed Nurgle and his travels to the wicked land of Innistrad (pre-release). It was midnight, yes, literally midnight and 38 players had gathered to fight it out, vampire against human, werewolf against zombie, and human against wolf. With preparation done and every player seated at around 10 minute before midnight, the long awaited countdown was about to begin. Well actually most of the people were talking and ignoring the fact until the countdown actually started, but hey.
10… 9… 8… would I, Nurgle do the classic 2 rare lands and crap rares…
7…6…5… could I get at least get a few zombie cards so I can build that deck for standard…
4…3…2… I’m not going to open money rares am I?
The sounds of booster ripping spread through the room as everyone were looking for cards like Liliana of the Veil and Snapcaster Mage. After many sounds of: “This is my pool?!” “Yes I got the card(s) I wanted!” and “So much awesome flavor!”. For the first time in my long career of midnight pre-releases, guess what? I could finally say: YES I got the cards I wanted.
So the rare cards I opened for the sealed tournament:
Pack 1: Mindshrieker
Pack 2: Gutter Grime
Pack 3: Splinterfright
Pack 4: Geist-Honored Monk
Pack 5: Liliana Of The Veil
Pack 6: Snapcaster mage
Wait wait wait wait what did I just get!? Yes I was insanely happy about the cards I opened in my last two packs. It was looking to be another night of okay rares that will work fine but not be “DA bomb” once they hit the battlefield. The last two packs changed that and the night became awesome. Funny the fact, I ended up playing Red and White instead of Black and/or Blue. Hey I see the look in your eyes. Don’t you dare look at me like that again! With my pool, it was the best possible deck, several removals in red, and good creatures in white (and removal) seemed to be a perfect mix of cards. Even though I wanted to play Liliana, it didn’t feel worth it when I had to play only a few good and mostly mediocre black cards to use it.
The deck I ended up playing looked like this:
1x Geist-Honored Monk
1x Thraben Sentry
1x Voicless Spirit
1x Unruly Mob
1x Silverchase Fox
1x Chapel Geist
1x Village Bell-Ringer
2x Mausoleum Guard
1x Feral Ridgewolf
1x Reckless Waif
1x Hanweir Watchkeep
1x Skirsdag Cultist
Other spells: 9
2x Moment Of Heroism
1x Smite the Monstrous
1x Rally the Peasants
2x Brimstone Volley
1x Rolling Temblor
1x Traitorous Blood
1x Nightbird’s Clutches
1x Butcher’s Cleaver
Land (don’t remember if this is right): 17
I will post this for now, and in the next part, I will tell you how the tournament actually went for this deck! I will also tell you the reason why this was the greatest night pre-release I’ve ever been apart of.
So until next time, take care.
Hello my Nurglings!
And welcome to this little preview of what Innistrad is to hold! Well, almost anyway. Mark Rosewater just posted some interesting information about Innistrad, and I must say it all sounds very interesting! Here they come with a comment to follow. (All statements in bold).
A card based on a silver-bordered white card
Okay so let us start on the first note, a card based on a silver-borded white card. That means, a card from unhinged or unglued, and I’m going through them right now to see if I can find a card with an interesting mechanic that feels like it could be placed in Innistrad. Must say, that was harder than I thought haha, it really depends on how they change the mechanic and it’s usage. Oh well, here are two cards that could be interesting to see a rework of.
A token-making sorcery which makes more creature tokens than any previous token-making spell (not counting X spells or spells that make a variable number)
How many creatures are we talking about exactly? Hmm I bet someone will be counting the cards that makes tokens in different formats, the first to come to mind is Conquerer’s Pledge from Zendikar and it creates twelve counters. So maybe 13 is a number here? Let me get back to you on that number soon.
An enchantment that could let you play all your creatures for free A spell that
Oh my lord, am I seeing an Aluren like card coming back to the game? It’s not Aluren itself cause it’s on the reserved list (never being printed again), but seeing a new version of this would be awesome!
A spell that can deal 13 damage to multiple creatures for one mana (and yes, I mean 13 damage multiple times)
And here we are again with the number 13 even if the first one was just speculation, seeing as 13 is a fitting number for the horror theme, I bet there is a cycle of cards with the focus on 13. It will also be interesting to see the drawback of this card, or how you get to target multiple creatures. Is there a storm effect coming back, like the Gravestorm effect first shown in Future Sight? Don’t know what I’m talking about? Take a look:
(If you have problem seeing it: Gravestorm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each permanent put into a graveyard this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies.))
Many—and I’m talking more than a few—cards inspired by famous horror stories
And here we go:
A card that turns a loss into a win
A two-mana creature that lets you make a 2/2 creature each turn for two mana
A card that lets you exchange your life total with something you’ve never been able to exchange it with before
This is interesting. What exactly will be able to trade life with? What is this card exactly, may it be a Planeswalkers ability that lets us do this, and with what are you trading exactly. There are a few guesses on the web, none of them really making sense so far. Will be fun to see what this means.
And the last and for me most important point if this is for Liliana.
A planeswalker with five loyalty abilities
Until next time, read up on the horror.
Before I went to bed, I thought I would look around for some rumors and new facts about Innistrad and wow! Does it sound awesome to be a horror fan, and a fan of black!
Let’s the following quotes shall we:

OMG! OMG OMG! I’m sorry, but I’m having such a nerd orgasm right now, and first I thought that a lot of this would be mono black, but … this set is going to be insane trust me. I will love every color in this set. I love zombie movies, I love horror stories, books and movies and we get a set that focuses around three of the main creatures of which I love? I love you wizards, I do.

“Werewolves are a very very key part of this set, they’re red & green.” #mtgsdcc
Okay so I need to get Green to get some awesome Werewolf stuff. Check.
“YES she (Lillian) is in the set. Also, there are TWO planeswalkers in the set.” #mtgsdcc

One more thing. Dark Ascension. Control the Night. February 2012.
Yes, that is the name of the set after Innistrad. And there is… ARTWORK OF SORIN! This block… I will be playing a lot of magic in the next few months. ❤
“There ARE more than just vampires, werewolves, & zombies in horror. I gave you just a taste.” @maro254 #mtgsdcc
Until next time, dream of horrors!
