To start of, I suck at promising myself things that I will do and then actually stick it with. Somethings I can manage easily throughout a certain amount of time but I usualy end up braking a patern and then it’s hard to get back in to it again. This really goes for any kind of promise or life decision.
Buuuuut I like making them! So instead of a: you must do this kind of thinking. I will instead do a list of things that I wish to have done during 2015 or at least attempted. No matter how much of this I do or finish I will still feel good if I just get a single thing done. So, here we go.
During 2015 I want to do the following! (In no specific order…)
1. Do an actually first draft/alpha version on one of my boardgame ideas.
2. Start doing boardgame review videos! (Alone or with a group).
3. Play in a Store Championship for a FFG game (Netrunner, Conquest etc.)
4. Get a new computer! (Can you really set this as a goal?)
5. Maaaaybe start doing a bit of streaming (again)(Like really… AGAIN)
6. Start a kickstarter, for any kind of project that has been in my head for years
7. Apply to a certain schoooool (top secret, very good, wow)
8. Get at least 10 new board games from my BG-wishlist (probably easiest on the list … )
9. Try and beat my previous best blog year (300.000 hits)
And those are the ones that I can come up with right now. Probably will put more on this list as time goes by, but for now this will do!
Until next time, take care Nurglings.
(DISCLAIMER: To all my usual nerdy visitors, sorry about this being in Swedish and if you use Google Translate completley unrelevant to previous content. But I’m about to start posting thougts, debate articles etc. on here as well. And most of them will be in Swedish. Hope you stay for the nerd content when it appears 🙂 )
Time to look at another Kickstarter project! And it’s a game of course like always when I check out Kickstarter. Okay sometimes I do look at other nerdy things, but really, the game part is the most interesting for me personally.
So today we’re looking at a CCG named Orbs.
Before I continue talking about the games and what I feel are ups and downs of it, check out the Kickstarter video to make your opinion.
Also, here is the kickstarter page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/919406593/orbs-ccg-the-asynchronous-digital-collectible-card?ref=live
Okay so moving on!
There are a few things that I’m really looking forward to with Orbs CCG. One, is that it’s using my favorite mechanic from the Yu Gi Oh TCG: face down cards. This indicates that you have something to ruin your opponents day during his turn, and you can even bluff to make your opponent uncertain about his/her plays. It’s one of the best mechanics in Yu Gi Oh cause it creates a situation where the more knowledge you have about the game and play styles, the easier it is to see through the bluffs and play around it.
Secondly, much like the Scrolls online card game, they are using a energy resource system where you discard cards to get resources, this stops you from having the issue of something called “mana-screw” in MTG. Which means that you don’t have the resources needed to play the cards in your hand. Something that should always be prevented in card games, even tho it’s a big part of MTG, it’s probably one of the few things that could have been done better with the game from the beginning.
And my third and favorite feature of the game; you can take turns overtime. There are currently two ways of playing the game, one is to play in real-time against your opponent, the other is that you and your opponent take turns over time, you get a notification when your opponent is done, and you can take your turn whenever you wish, and then he will get a notification when you’re done and so on. Very much like playing word-puzzle games on your phone.
The one thing that worries me about the capability of playing like this, is the fact that you don’t have to be a active player to respond to your opponent. So your traps seems more like triggers that will happen even if you don’t want them to. Which means bluffing becomes a bit harder when you can’t think about your responses. Instead the game makes them for you at appropriate time (probably).
But many online card games are actually lacking in the instant-respons area. So it’s nothing we should worry about at the moment. The game play can still be awesome and fun! The last thing that I feel I have to mention: I hope the overall visual design gets worked on a bit more. Yes I’m a horrible person and I actually buy boardgames/cardgames from a “wow this looks cool” reaction…
I’m looking forward to seeing the future of this game and I wish the best of luck to Orbs and Jerpix, Inc.
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
Hello Nurglings, it’s list time once again!
This time with the new cards from the sweet set: Dragon’s Maze. So the plan for this ”list” is to split it up in to two different categories. The first one being: the top 5 BEST cards of the set. This is of course the five cards I think will have the biggest effect on the Standard / Type 2 format. Yes I always rate cards on their effect on Standard when doing new cards like this.
Secondly I will do my Top 5 Favorite cards of the set. This can be based on ANYTHING, the sweet art of the card, the flavor, the power of it, ideas it puts in my head about deckbuilding and so on. Cards from the Top 5 Best cards will not be on this second list even if some of them may or may not be cards that are indeed a few of my favorites.
SO HERE WE GO!
5. Ral Zarek
I know you’re all over the place about this card beeing on spot 5 on this list. But you know why? Becuase it’s not that good at the moment. If you play him to be a expensive Lightning Bolt, then you should play a burn spell, if you play him to be aggressive and tap one of your opponents creatures, play another creature, a burn spell or Aurelia’s Fury that hits your opponent as a surprise. BUT I’m not saying it’s a bad card. I love Ral Zarek and I’m looking forward to see where and how he will be played in the format.
4. Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
Hehe, this guy got Vigilance and he’s unbowed… hehe. So Ruric will either be a total flop and I can complain about being wrong later on… OR he will be the most annoying card you will ever face. If you have to play a spell to deal with this guy you will also have to deal with the 6 damage to your face. He got a 6/6 body which if of course fine for the converted mana cost of six. The only true downside to this card is that it HAS to attack each turn… so go ahead and do that. Oh and he also blocks ALL creature that are currently being played in the format, even a certain hard hitting haste dragon.
3. Council of the Absolute
This may or may not see play, I’m putting Council on the third spot because I do believe he got a spot in the control sideboards. Play this guy and call out the key cards of your opponents deck and hope for the best. Okay so you will say Sphinx’s Revelation 89% of the time. Not only will that block your opponent from playing it, but will give you 2 extra life and 2 extra cards.
2. Advent of the Wurm
Okay is a hasted 5/5 trample creature for 4 mana that you can bring back with Snapcaster Mage a good enough card? Wait… you don’t think it has haste? Well you will play it at the end of your opponents turn, so it will be beating your opponent as soon as possible. And even if it can be blocked by a Thragtusk most creatures in the format can be traded with Thragtusk (except for the Ruric Thar of course <3).
1. Voice of Resurgence
Have you ever wanted to play a value card for 2 mana? Well this cards brings the value. Even if they waste a removal spell to deal with Resurgence, you will still get a 1/1 creature that will get bigger for each other creature you have on the field. Of course this is not the main reason the card is great, as soon as your opponent plays a spell on your turn, you will also get on of those “tiny” creatures. This may just be one of the most overrated cards in the set, or one of the greatest cards in the set. I’m not sure yet. There’s still plenty of ways to deal with Voice of Resurgence, and sure the earlier drop can be annoying but I don’t think it will turn the game completely to that players favor.
But, if you’re playing a control deck yourself like Bant for example, you have a great early creature here.
Hmm Hmm HMMM.
Now as I write this and start thinking about the card and where it should be played, and what decks it’s supposed to be good against. Well, we will just have to wait and see what the impact of the card may be. Since aggressive decks are currently being VERY popular this card may just not have the impact that it should.
Okay Nurglings, thanks for checking in on the first 5 cards of my top 10 list. I hope you enjoyed, and soon I will post my five favorite cards! Oh and remember, it’s all opinion.
Until next time Nurglings, take care!
A long time ago, I asked if there was anyone out there that would like to write for this blog. At the time I didn’t get that many readers and the ones that did come on here often probably weren’t bloggers themselves. But now the number of readers has been going up steadily (yay!). So I thought I would give this another chance. This time with a little more proper request.
What am I looking for?
– Anyone is welcome to leave a message here and tell me you’re interested! It doesn’t matter what gender, how old, or where you’re from. Just enjoy writing!
– You love games and gaming
– You love writing about games and gaming!
– If you already have a blog where you write regularly that is great!
– I’d love to see people that interested in any of the following; Card Gaming in general, YuGiOh, Miniature Gaming, nerdy things, “life of a gamer” issues/thoughts and ideas.
Something that’s important for you to know is that I’m not looking to steal time from your blog writing, if you have something that you’re posting on your blog that is interesting for gaming nerds I will simply share it on my blog as well. Sure I’d love to see you write something specific that would fit on here but it’s not a requirement.
What do I as a guest writer get out of this?
– Info/PR for you and your own blog! I will make a page specially for anyone that wants to share their writing on here. There you can write a small presentation on you with a link to your own blog! (Presentation is of course optional).
– Be a part of a bigger community. If this goes well, and we get a few bloggers together, there is no end to what this could become. Next step may be a website, YouTube and Twitter account under a collaboration name.
– This is a thing that’s supposed to be FUN! Always remember that.
What is this project?
– The whole idea with this project is to create a small community with writers/gamers and hobbyist that LOVE to share their thoughts on different subjects in gaming.
– This blog will be a spring board to share our articles and thoughts to work our way up in the blogging world.
– Together we can do great things!
– Most importantly, this project is supposed to be FUN. Not a goldmine, not a publicity stunt for anyone, but a fun project with an evolving community and goal.
So what are you waiting for? Already have something that you feel would be worth sharing? Leave me a message!
And if you have any questions? Leave me a message!
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
Okay so I thought I would explains something, before you all Google the word: Nurgling, and get all upset with me for what you find there. Well to begin with, you may not know this but the nickname that my friends use for me is: Nurgle. Yes. Really they use that name when we’re hanging out in the “real world”.
That became a thing and because of that I decided to call my readers: Nurglings. A Nurgling, is basically a small minion/creature of Nurgle. They are small, green, disgusting and smelly, but they look kinda cute.
(Picture found here: http://www.elfwood.com/~keane/Nurgling-2.2902713.html )
Okay so what is Nurgle?
Nurgle is one of the four Chaos Gods in the Warhammer lore. He is the god of plague, famin, decease and sickness. He grants his followers the ability to ignore all pain but in return they are filled with decease and… well they are not as attractive as they used to be.
Nurgle, is also known as : Grandfather or Father Nurgle. The reason for this nickname is because he is the one god that cares for all his followers. His minions are his children, and he care for them. So if I am Nurgle, I will call you Nurglings as I care for all my readers.
Without readers, I would not keep this blog up. So thank you Nurglings for sticking around.
Much love to all of you!
Until next time Nurglings, stay classy.
Time for my top five newly created cards from Magic 2013 Core set, I usually do top 10, but I thought I would do a top 5 newly created and top 5 reprints. So let’s start with my favorite five new cards!
On spot number 5…
5. Cathedral of War
Is it just me that tries to find space for this card in every deck? If you play an aggressive deck this can be great to boost your early creatures, if you play big, it’s great just to make big even bigger. It comes in tapped which is sad, but I still think that this card will find its way in to some decks. I love it!
4. Knight of Glory/Infamy
I put these two at the same spot mostly because they are just mirrored versions of each other, only difference being what they protect themselves against. The exalted part makes these cards shine, the very same turn you put them in they will be able to boost another attacking creature. I absolutely love these guys, and no matter what kind of mono-black deck I will be building in the next format (except if it’s a dedicated Vampire deck) Knight of Infamy will be in it.
3. Augur of Bolas
I was going to put the new Merfolk lord on this list, but it’s really not a new card, it’s a updated version of Lord of Atlantis so I decided not to add him. Augur of Bolas is a new Merfolk friend that I think… may actually see play. Surprised? No. It’s not as good as Sea Gate Oracle, he is not a Ponder, but he is a cheap enough creature that makes his effect worthwhile. With enough sorceries and instants in your decks, you will be hitting those spells 70% (I have not done the math) of the time. Loving him!
2. Talrand, the Sky Summoner
This is another card that I believe will have some impact on Standard. And remember that this is MY favorite list so it’s not all about power. Talrand creates value, and as soon as you get to cast one, two or maybe even three spells while he is on the field, it all gets crazy. Don’t be surprised if you see him at your FNM after rotation (maybe even before).
WHAT!? This guy, I love him! He is basicly a new Wurmcoil Engine for green. I know he doesn’t have Death Touch, but he gains you the life and if he leaves the field you still get a 3/3 to fight with. Actually, getting 5 life when he hits the battlefield is a lot better than having to attack your opponent, I have a green/white list with this guy in it, and I cannot wait to try that deck out. I may be posting it here soon for you all to check out. A big reason that this guy is useful is the fact that Vapor Snag/Unsummon will be useless against him in the format to come. Return him to my hand? I get a 3/3 and a chance to play him again for more value. Delver won’t like this guy.
So that’s my list, thanks for reading.
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
I just had to create this after what happened at todays tournament…
Yea, he did it in response to that Unburial Rites though. But still. It sucked, how often have you cast a card with:
Pay 2 life, exile a card from your opponents graveyard and he Exile 3 cards from his hand. Oh. Not often?
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
– UPDATE 2017 –
Hello dear reader, I know that this blog post sometimes get linked in discussions about MTG cards and some of the problematic art that may appear in the game. Sometimes, linked also in discussions about Wizards way of handling and answering to the community. In the past years I’ve always found it fun to see my written text used in this discussion, until I actually took the time to read it again.
Now I mostly feel silly, ashamed and also very surprised about the person I was only a few years back. Much has happened since then of course, when it comes to discussing issues and problematic trends in game design.
And I just want you to know that my opinion on these topics have changed drastically, not becuase I’m a great defender of justice, not because I got brainwashed, but because I’ve taken the time to learn, listen and realize that me and my opinions are not set in stone, rather they are set in a formable clay. And I will happily reform that clay and add to it by learning and creating a greater understanding of the world around me.
Now, I will not remove or change the original text, it stands as a reminder to myself that I in fact changed alot the last few years, and I’m very proud of that evolution.
To end with a quick thought, Wizard clearly did the right thing to apoligize for the art itself and to not use it in future printings of the card. If a big part of their community feels affected and troubled by the card art, it’s a problem. MTG is a game that in itself should welcome all players and groups, and this kind of card just did not fit into that. It created a situation online and at events that became very non-welcoming to the games non-male demographic. I will leave it that for now, and clarify in the comments if you have any questions.
We can all learn. We can all change.
I just did not imagine that I would do so without actually realizing that I did.
I’m sitting here with a feeling of: what just happened? I’ve been following discussions on Twitter that has been going on for the last few hours. The discussions concern a new card from Avacyn Restored; Triumph of Ferocity.
Can you guess why this card has been wildly discussed? I think you can, but it may not be as clear as you think. As it seems, it’s about 50/50 in what people see in this picture. I for one actually liked this artwork, it shows the struggle between Garruk and Liliana, he’s about to smack her down and she is just about to throw a spell in his face. I bet many of you see that as well, but some of you will see something completely different. Something that I understand can be disturbing; and that is that the whole scene taking place symbolizes rape.
Taking a step back, yes it’s a struggle between a man and woman. Had this been two men fighting, I doubt we would be having this discussion right now. Maybe we would have, but I doubt it. I respect the fact that some people see this in the artwork, and I understand where it comes from. But I almost feel as if this issue or idea has been taken a bit… far.
Why do you see “rape” when you look at this image?
Is it because we see a female in a weaker position towards a male? Is it because of the position of the bodies, and again the fact that the male character has a more aggressive/overhead stance over her? That’s what I’m guessing and yes I see that too, but where is the part that says rape? Why is he forced to be judged as someone that is about to rape a woman?
Turn the two roles around, let’s imagine Liliana (the woman) pushing Garruk down towards a rock. Now he is the spell caster, what would you think of the art? Just a quick thought would be: “Sweet! She is kicking ass!” instead of right now; “Why is he forcing her down like that?!”
It annoys me greatly that a struggle between a male character and a female character where the man is winning apparently is not accepted as artwork.
But, I understand, once again, where you’re coming from with these thoughts. I respect that fact, but I also hope that you can respect that I disagree. Artworks in a game will “always” at one time or another, create these emotions. And that is what this card was created for, emotion of what is taking place. I think that this one card may have captured it better than any card in Avacyn Restored. Not only do we realize it, a lot of you feel it so strongly that you turn it into a problem.
I’ll gladly get some comments on this, cause I’m writing straight out of my head. I probably didn’t follow up on all my thoughts or explained them well enough. If so, comment, discuss and I will be back with a follow up.
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
