Ignorant gaming communities, and how to join them.

Hello Nurglings!

Warning: This is a very long article!

I thought I would share something that has been… not bothering me, but it’s a thought that has been twirling around in my head. Lately there have been a lot of articles posted about the female players of Magic, how they are looked at by 90% of the players who are male. And thankfully also their accomplishments in Magic.

I was thinking about this at the same time as I was sitting down at my local hobby shop, looking through my Yu Gi Oh collection. At the same time I was talking with a few of my friends that plays Magic the Gathering. The room was crowded with players playing different card games. A World of Warcraft TCG tournament was taking place in the room, some Yu Gi Oh players took up a big table discussing the game and playing it, and in front of me my friends were sleeving The Spoils decks to demo the game at an event here in Gothenburg the next day. A huge mix of games and players of all ages, it was a good day for card games.
In the past I was very active in the Yu Gi Oh community, as a gamer and collector. I’m still a moderator at the biggest Yu Gi Oh forum in Sweden, and I try to stay somewhat up to date so I can join the discussions or at least understand them. A year or so ago I switched my focus to other card games and haven’t really been active with Yu Gi Oh.

Recently the Yu Gi Oh Swedish national was announced, and I thought I would join in. Meeting with the people again and doing something that I actually enjoy more than gaming; going to events and experiencing the social side of card gaming. When sitting with the cards I was met by skepticism from the other Yu Gi Oh players. Mainly because I wasn’t active anymore, and they questioned why I would start with it now instead of just keep playing Magic the Gathering.

This onetime thing didn’t really bother me too much, I know the Yu Gi Oh players around here and shortly after I was offered to borrow cards for Nationals if I really wanted to join. I KNEW this, but what if I was a new player, sitting down for the first time, building a deck for a tournament that is way over my head (and still is to be honest). Just to hear: why are you even trying?

Yu Gi Oh is a constant eternal format just like Magic the Gatherings Vintage or Legacy. All cards are allowed in tournaments except for a selected few on a banlist. These types of formats and games usually costs more than games focused around new cards and sets. This is because of a simple thing: supply and demand. The older the set gets, the cards from it gets harder to find and fewer and fewer cards keep rotating between players. The prices go up and it becomes less interesting for new players to join that type of game because of this.

But not only is the cost a problem, but the community that plays these eternal formats are usually players that have stuck with it for a long time. What I’ve noticed with these players is the fact that not many of them allow new players to “join in”. New blood is considered players without skills and without decks and cards that are interesting to play against. And that may be true, new players don’t have the decks or skills yet, but why shut them out just because they aren’t at your level?

I think this is one of many things that are happening within Magic right now, discussing the female players. The male demographic is having issues with the fact that this smaller group of players that haven’t really been successful before, are starting to become worthy opponents. If a smaller group of Legacy players have issues with new players without skills or decks. The male gaming community as a whole has been having this issue with female players. It’s time to become more accepting of new players, especially if we want our gaming groups or games in general to grow.

We can’t let the new players be shut out just because they don’t know everything from the start. If we talk about the game with them, play it with them and discuss things that they may want to think about. They will find that once you become a part of the community, the community is awesome. The social aspect of card games is a huge thing, blogs, forums, gaming groups, these are all huge and important things for a card game to have. But as a social game, we also need to respect each other and people we meet through gaming. No matter the gender, what they’ve played before, how much they’ve played or even what their names are.

Learn the basics:
If you’re a new player, or someone that wants to try a new game out. Try and look at the rules before you head down to your local hobby or gaming store. The more of the basic rules you know, the easier it will be for the older players to respect you as a new player.

Be social:
Even if the gamers there may a bit nervous with you being new. Talk to them, they are not as dangerous as they look.

Put your hard skin on:
As the new player you will realize that there is a lot of “friendly bullying” going on between players. And this is nothing to be afraid of, this is something that is very common within any type of gaming, online or offline.

Ask other players for help (even if you don’t really want it):

People that think they are good at any game, love to talk about their skills. Ask the other players for help, about your deck, gaming style or whatever. They love to share what they think is best. This way it’s easier to talk to them afterwards and that is a huge positive side effect of asking a simple question.

Well that was it for now everyone.
Until next time Nurglings, take care.

Nerd Calendar – 1st – Christmas Lego Yoda

Hello my Nurglings!

And happy first December to you! The next 24 days I will be posting something very Christmas-e and nerd-ish every day. The idea just popped in to my head, so this very first day may not be so fun. But as I always say: it’s something!

I will try and find better and more fun stuff to show the days to come, I promise! For now:

Until next time, take care!

Poll of the day – Favorite game to see duels from?

Hello my Nurglings!

Yea the questions is kind of straight forward. I’ve been doing a lot of dueling videos lately and I do think some of you enjoy them, I’ve been focusing heavily on Yu Gi Oh games though (Yu Gi Oh players are the ones most excited about being recorded). But I could try and get more games and videos up here from stuff ike Magic The Gathering (not Magic Online), Pokémon games or something else.

Thanks for answering the question!
Until next time, take care.

7 Decks, 7 Games, 7 Days – Arcanist Menace (The Spoils)

Welcome to the first day of seven! The following week I will be visiting seven different card games, and show you seven different decks (one from each), decks constructed just for you guys. Some decks may be more competitive than others, and some may be just for the fun of it. Whatever reason the decks are put out, there will be seven decks in the following week and the last one will be posted on Friday.
The very first deck I’m posting is from the lovely game The Spoils, the game I promised to talk more about in the future, and here we are in the future! The deck will be focusing on my favorite faction from the game, The Arcanists. This hellish, occult, horror and Cuthulu inspired faction have plenty of fun toys to play with, let’s take a look at the deck piece by piece.

I’m going to start with the tactics, these cards are the fuel and control elements of the deck. They will protect you and look for the components you need to win in a given situation.

Tactic: 26
4x Obsessive Compulsion
4x Brainbath
4x Karmic Cake
4x Desolate
4x Encumber
4x Muddle
2x Inhibit

In the three first spots we have the cards that will dig deeper in to the deck and the needed cards for any situation. If you’re a Magic The Gathering player Obsessive Compulsion and Brainbath are both cards that you will recognize, well at least the general style of the cards, they’re very blue-ish. Together with these two cards we’re also using Karmic Cake, yes this deck is not completely mono Arcanist, but only a few Banker cards will actually be used in the deck. Karmic cake is one of those great cards for searching out your double resources, and you want to find them fast in this deck. Between Karmic cake, Obsessive Compulsion and Brainbath you should be able to.

The rest of the tactics are all there to handle different kinds of threats. Desolate for aggressive decks with plenty of Characters (go go Party Clowns!). Encumber is the only real spot removal in the deck, being able to take care of both Characters and Locations, be careful to not use this card to early! Be sure to target the right threat. Muddle and Inhibit are the only two cards used to handle certain cards and matchups, you will eventually learn when to use them (so will I). Inhibit for example is great to stop cards with effects that will destroy your items or characters.

Let’s move on to the characters!

Character: 22
4x Wrinkly Rabbit
4x Hideous Hexapede of Horror
4x Defiler of Innocence
4x Wanton Wizard
2x Woadenworm Gloamspike, Thabbashite Prince
1x Swarm of Gnats
1x Servile Centipede
1x Spastic Tentacles
1x Violating Anomaly

Let’s discuss the two win conditions here at the Characters: Wrinkly Rabbit and Hideous Hexapede Of Horror. These are huge when it comes to doing damage, Rabbit can easily be a 6-6-3 or 7-7-3 and a huge creature like that with convert is nothing to laugh at, well I guess you could laugh at the artwork, it’s awesome. Hideous Hexapede Of Horror is a huge Character with a 6-6-6 stat, one of the fastest Characters in the game and for a great cost, use Defiler Of Innocence to grant him Covert when you want to hit for plenty of damage. He also comes with a great finisher effect, if you’re in the lead, blow some cards up, hit the opponent for plenty of damage to finish him off, and enjoy the massive destruction! Remember the cost though, picking 6 characters, this means that you won’t be able to activate the effect until there are 6 characters in play.

Defiler of Innocence is a card that I love, against certain matchups it’s nothing but a Covert maker, but even that can be well enough at times, making your opponent unable to block. When he’s allowed to use his tap ability, he just becomes awesome. Even when you don’t hit a card in your opponents hand you’re still able to SEE HIS HAND, and read the situation and try to create a strong position for yourself.

Wanton Wizard is there to make use of Thabbashite Prince, together they let you reuse your tactics, even if the most exciting ones for that are Desolate and Muddle, that’s not a bad thing. Wanton Wizard, Swarm Of Gnats, Servile Centipede, Spastic Tentacles and Violating Anomaly are all toys for your deck that will be used with the next few cards I will show you. Remember that we have Bankers in the deck…

Item: 4
4x Inadequate Wand

Location: 4
4x Gilded Yurt

Bounce the bounce! That’s right, together with these four cards the last mentioned characters get to use the leave and enters play effects over and over again, doing a few nasty tricks on your opponent. Discarding two cards every turn (or more for that matter), look at his hand discarding the most important card, search your deck for tactics, bounce cards, and put tactics from your graveyard as facedown resources. These effects are all to annoy the hell out of your opponent, some of them may not look all that dangerous at first, but they will add up quickly.

Quick check on the resources, and yes as you can see, Karmic Cake is important!

Resources: 19
4x Neurosis
4x Exploitation
1x Greed (1 start)
10x Obsession (1 start)

Enjoy the deck everyone and until tomorrow have a great time and don’t let those rabbits blow up to much!

Cya soon!

My return to The Spoils! Welcome to The Spoils!

Hello everyone, I’m glad to see you all back here now that I have an announcement to make. Well actually most of you already know that I’ve been talking about The Spoils lately and that I want to support this game and its growth. And like the honest man I am, this first post on The Spoils is about my very “return” to the game, even though I have been staying somewhat updated at the official forums and was just sitting down with the vast rule document and judge guidelines (you need to read up on those once in awhile), I feel ready to return.

I recently applied myself to volunteer as an article writer or “columnist” for the The Spoils website. The very first thing I was asked to write about, or hinted that I could write about, was my local meta game. At this time I think Bizze is better suited for that task, seeing as they have more constructed tournaments in his area. Where I live we’re crazy about limited formats, sealed and drafts is the way we love to go, it’s also a great way to get new players in to the mix. They sit down, see the cards, build a deck and get a small collection to start of their The Spoils careers.

So, no, this is not an article I’m doing for The Spoils site, this is all for you my Nurgle fans. I don’t think a personal note about me coming back would be very interesting for them so instead, I welcome you all to the spoils!

Well thank you Nurgle, but what is this marvelous “The Spoils” that you talk about?

The spoils is one heck of a card game, it got humor, great game play, sweet community and lately some awesome tournament support. Arcane Tinmen is really doing their best to give something to their players, and I must say their doing a great job and deserve a huge player base. Just like many other card games, they have weekly tournaments known as Afternoon Saturday Spoils (ASS for short). Where you have to chance to get some sweet promos, meet up with people, try your new decks and just have a great time.

If you’re familiar with different competitive card games, you will probably recognize the style of the The Spoils quickly, it’s taken the best from several different systems and put it together to the best possible experience. If you ever played Magic The Gathering for example, you know that at times you will draw a lot of mana and flood your hand, or vice versa. In the spoils you instead use a resource system where any and every card in your hand can be used set facedown a recourse on the field. There is more to it of course, but for an example that will do for now.

As you know I’m currently located in Gothenburg Sweden (or now you know), and for all of you that are Swedish and hit this blog, if you’re interested in the spoils hit me with an email (contact information at the top of the blog) or just a comment to let me know that you are out there. The rescue missions for the game may have been a great success but it’s now time to help the game grow in my local area. Wish me the best of luck everyone!

By the way, if to write an article on The Spoils, where should I start? What should I write about? I’m really taking a long deep look for inspiration and I probably need to get in to the constructed game again to really feel what I can and want to write. Well until next time, stay safe, look up the spoils and have fun!

Cya soon!
