MTG Modern deck – Junk Shadow – Using a Dragon’s Maze card! [Voralz]

Hello Nurglings!

God have I been trying to write this for some time now, I bet two articles will appear today so stay right there! And await the awesome! Anyway on to the thingy…. you know… the text and the deck and the reading.

So one of my favorite spoiled cards from Dragon’s Maze right now is a Legendary Golgari creature that will fight for his right to win the race through the maze! Wow I made that sound awesome didn’t I!? Just like Lotleth troll was one of my favorite spoiled cards from Return to Ravnica (still is) this card has earned a place in my heart.

Enough talking, more spoiling!

Dragon's Maze - Spoiler - Varolz the Scar Striped

Okay I know, I know you have known about this card for some time…. I know! But let’s make a deck out of it shall we? The first thing I had to figure out was: what cards do I need to enable this deck. The obvious combo that was already being discussed as I started working on this deck was: Varolz, The Scar-Striped + Death’s Shadow. For one single mana, you will make one of your creature +13/+13…. INSANE. But we also need creatures to use it on, and we need to make sure that we can connect with those creatures. So how do we do that? Unblockable? Flying? …. TRAMPLE?

So I’ve decided to pick the following colors for the deck: Green, Black and White. The third color can actually be ANY color. It all depends on what cards you want to use and how you will use them. For me, there were actually a few cards that made me go this path. All I will go mention them as we go along… KNIGHT OF THE RELIQUARY. God damn it brain.

junk shadow

So here is the list:

Creatures: 19
4x Death’s Shadow
4x Lotleth Troll
4x Knight of the Reliquary
4x Bloodghast
3x Varolz, the Scar-Striped

Other Spells: 17
4x Path to Exile
3x Liliana of The Veil
3x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Lingering Souls
2x Life from the Loam
2x Maelstrom Pulse
1x Raven’s Crime

Lands: 24
4x Verdant Catacombs
4x Marsh Flats
3x Misty Rainforest
3x Dryad Arbor
2x Godless Shrine
2x Overgrown Tomb
2x Temple Garden
1x Murmuring Bosk
1x Forest
1x Swamp
1x Plains

So this deck has PLENTY of different kind of synergies that we will have to try and abuse. Below I will tell you about a few of the basic things that we can do and need to know about this deck.

BFF combo
1. The Lotleth Troll + Dryad Arbor + Life from the Loam synergy
With Lotleth Troll you can discard Dryad Arbor to get +1/+1 and then use loam to return the Dryad Arbors to your hand… and there you go, repeat the process while getting bigger! A good tip tho: Don’t overdo it unless you have to, having a big creature is fun, but drawing cards win you games.

2. The Lotleth Troll + Dryad Arbor + Knight of the Reliquary trick
So you attack with a 4/4 Knight of Reliquary and a 3/2 Lotleth Troll. What can go wrong if he does not block this attack? Well each discarded Dryad Arbor counts for another 2 damage in your opponents face. Not a massive trick, but it can hit the enemy when they least expect it if they decide to a bad block or “trade”.

counters brah
3. Varolz, The Scar-Striped + Death’s Shadow
This is really one of the major plans for the deck, get Death’s Shadow in to the grave. And put Varolz on the field. TADA huge creature. The best target for this pump would be Lotleth Troll, Varolz himself or a Spirit token created by Lingering Souls.

4. Liliana and Lotheth Troll
This has nothing to do with a synergy between these two cards, I just want to mention the importance of these two cards for your deck. Death’s Shadow is not the most awesome card to have in your hand. You want to get him to your graveyard as soon as possible when you Varolz. Liliana and Troll help us with that plan.

a cozy place
5. Lotleth Troll + Bloodghast
Opponent low on HP? Discard a Bloodghast for a pump, play a land to return him to the field, attack with 1 extra damage instead of JUST playing Bloodghast.

6. Raven’s Crime + Life from the Loam
You don’t need to be a rockiiiit scientist for this. Get your lands back to your hand and use Raven’s Crime over and over.

7. Lingering Souls + Varolz, The Scar Striped
Once again this is not a combo, just a good thing to be aware of. Lingering souls is in the deck to make it easier for you to keep Varolz alive with his sacrifice a creature for regen ability.

Okay so that was most of the things that you should think about, but I can also hear you say: Why are we not playing Jund instead of Junk? Well… good question! The main reason: I like Junk, I enjoy the color combination and so I try to build around that. If you truly wish to make it something more Jund like instead. Here are a few pointers:

4x Knight of the Reliquary
2x Path to Exile

1x Abrubt Decay
1x Life From The Loam
1x Flame Jab
3x Seismic Assault

I think I covered some of the stuff good didn’t I? Hope you enjoy the deck, please let me know if you try it or something similar to it!

Until next time Nurglings, take care.
Cya soon!

  1. I think Jund would benefit from vexing devil as well

  2. Inkmoth Nexus is a hilarious target to scavenge Shadows on to. Also Treetop Village.
