Let’s talk about – Return to Ravnica – Azorius

Hello Nurglings!

So I’ve previously talked about the Golgari guild, mostly because it covers my favorite colors and the fact that it currently have plenty of sweet cards spoiled for it. But Azorious is slowly gaining ground on awesomeness. Like always, Blue/White tend to get cards that looks and seems amazing.

Something else that truly speaks for the Azorious: is their current creature set up in the Standard environment. What I’m talking about? Well let’s take a look at the creature base of two popular U/W Delver builds.

4 Delver of Secrets
4 Geist of Saint Traft
3 Restoration Angel
4 Snapcaster Mage

4 Delver of Secrets
4 Geist of Saint Traft
4 Snapcaster Mage
2 Talrand, Sky Summoner

There are a few other versions of this, some have Augur of Bolas, some have Invisible Stalker, but that’s not the important part. The important thing is: look at the amount of cards that rotate out of the format. Yup that’s right, NON of them. This doesn’t mean that the deck isn’t getting hit though, a strong card that they do lose from their sideboard is the awesome clone: Phantasmal Image. Also, their complete spell setup is being cleared out. I mean totally cleared out.

Ponder? No more.
Mana leak? No more.
Glitaxian Probe? No more.
Gut shot? No more.
Vapor Snag? No more.
Thought Scour? Oh it stays!

So what will all you U/W players be getting? Well… some awesome things.

Okay so we’re obviously amazed by this card. It’s a mix between the old goodies Maelstrom Pulse and Oblivion Ring, and their love child is looking great. It handles any non-land permanent and then any card named the same as that permanent (observe that it can’t target another Detention Sphere). I’m going to be honest about this, will this card truly be THAT played? Probably not? Why? Think about Oblivion Ring for a second. This card will basically take that slot for any deck that side boarded Oblivion Ring. This card will see more play than Oblivion Ring, but I’m not sure if it will be a “played everywhere” card. It’s a card that is easy to sideboard against, and if you truly want to take care of Token strategies (this card targets all tokens with the same name in one go), you may just be better off with the next card…

So Wrath of God and Day of Judgment don’t see all that much play in Modern or in the current Standard environment. There are many different reasons for this of course, the speed of the format, and the current power of a low number of creatures, and Flash, and… yea you get the picture.

Something that speaks for this card playability is the fact that it can’t be countered. It is just THAT important for this type of card. When you cast a removal card with the converted mana cost of 4, you want to make sure that it resolves. In the past, if it got countered, you basically lost that turn to do nothing with your mana. Now, you can at least from the look of things, handle the field of creatures. This may just shake up a few things in Modern.

Okay so before I go on, I’m not sure if Lyev Skyknight will be played, but some creature with the Detention trigger will be played in a mix with Cloudshifts and Restoration Angel. Detain feels and looks like one of the better Guild mechanics in Return To Ravnica.

The creature that is Detained can’t block that turn NOR can it attack when you pass the turn. Firstly when your next turn begins will it work as normal again. Awesome ability, and I would not be surprised to see it in a deck near you. Once again Blue get’s an ability that will work aggressively… come on!

Thanks for reading everyone!
Until next time Nurglings, take care.
Cya soon!
