Let’s Talk Innistrad – Garruk Relentless

Hello my Nurglings!

I must say that this Innistrad talk is way overdue, the new Garruk has been out there for awhile now, and I must love him right? Having my two favorite colors of Magic in one Planeswalker. But is he the Planeswalker of my dreams? Only time will tell, let’s take a look at him shall we.

This is one hard nut to crack, is it great, is it good, is it usable? The ability that looks really interesting is on his cursed side. It lets you sacrifice a creature to search your library for a creature. Together with his two token creation abilities, it seems all right and somewhat easy to use… right? The problem is the way you turn him over, depending on what deck you’re facing, you may end up shooting one of your own wolves to turn him over. I’m so conflicted about this, the way to flip him over, just don’t feel… good.

So do you really want to turn him over? For 4 mana you get a Planeswalker that keeps putting out 2/2 wolves. They may just be good enough in the next format. But… oh wait. What other Planeswalker creates 3/3 creatures every round, while going up in Loyalty to prepare for one game winning ability? Ah that’s right, Garruk from M12. At this time, I prefer this guy. One extra mana but with bigger creatures and draw power built in, feels like a fair trade of.

I’m sorry Garruk Relentless, but Garruk, Primal Hunter is the Garruk for me.

Until next time, Garruk Garruk.
Cya soon!

  1. Just as a quick note, Primal Hunter doesn’t just cost (1) more, he costs 3 (G), which makes him much harder to play unless you are going mono green. You can also use his ability to deal damage to your opponents creatures and as you are sacrificing creatures, bear in mind that you can sacrifice your own 1/1 deathtouch wolves to use his -3 ability which gives all creatures you control +X/+X where X is the number of creatures in your graveyard AND trample. While I agree Primal Hunter is much more powerful, I think you are underestimating our veil cursed friend. Good article nonetheless! Peace.
